The first demonstration of laser action in ruby was made in 1960 by T. H. Maiman of Hughes Research Laboratories, USA. Many laboratories worldwide began the search for lasers using different materials, operating at different wavelengths. In the UK, academia, industry and the central laboratories took up the challenge from the earliest days to develop these systems for a broad range of applications. This historical review looks at the contribution the UK has made to the advancement of the technology, the development of systems and components and their exploitation over the last 60 years.

A long-term study was conducted at Lethbridge, Alberta, to determine the response of weed populations to various crop rotations and tillage treatments. Weed density and species composition differed with rotation, tillage, and date of sampling within years. Fewer weeds were found in winter wheat-fallow than continuous winter wheat, winter wheat-lentil, or winter wheat-canola rotations. A dense infestation of downy brome developed in the continuous winter wheat rotation. In all rotations, more weeds were present in zero tillage plots than in either minimum or conventional tillage plots. Dandelion and perennial sowthistle densities increased slightly over years in the minimum and zero tillage treatments. Flixweed, field pennycress, wild buckwheat, and common lambsquarters densities decreased in zero till but densities of downy brome, redroot pigweed, and Russian thistle increased. Russian thistle was not well controlled with trifluralin and its density increased in the winter wheat-canola rotation.

The dissemination of information by extension agents on dairy management practices used to control mastitis and the reception and use of that information by producers are investigated. Producers are surveyed to determine current practices used. The relationship between milk yield, somatic cell count, management practices, and producer and production characteristics is estimated. Subjective probabilities are elicited from “experts,” extension agents, and producers concerning the impact and cost of various management practices. Subjective marginal value products and marginal input costs are computed and compared for the respondent groups. Stochastic dominance is used to rank the relative importance of the practices as perceived by the respondents.

Glaucoma is a major cause of blindness and is characterized by death of retinal ganglion cells. In a rat model of glaucoma in which intraocular pressure is raised by cautery of episcleral veins, the somata and dendritic arbors of surviving retinal ganglion cells expand. To assess physiological consequences of this change, we have measured visual receptive-field size in a primary retinal target, the superior colliculus. Using multiunit recording, receptive-field sizes were measured for glaucomatous eyes and compared to both those measured for contralateral control eyes and to homolateral eyes of unoperated animals. Episcleral vein occlusion increased intraocular pressure. This was accompanied by a significant increase in receptive-field size across the superior colliculus. The expansion of receptive fields was proportional to both degree and duration of the increase of intraocular pressure. We suggest that this increase in the size of receptive fields of glaucomatous eyes may be related to the increase in the size of dendritic arbors of the surviving ganglion cells in retina.

Among mammals, non-offspring nursing is the most extreme form of communal parenting. This is because lactation is the most energetically costly part of parental investment (Clutton-Brock, 1991; Packer, Lewis & Pusey, 1992). Non-offspring nursing is most common in species characterized by large litters and small kin groups (Packer et al., 1992; e.g. lions Panthera leo: Pusey & Packer, 1994). Although non-offspring nursing has also been reported in monotocous species (e.g. water buffalo Bubalus bubalus, Murphey et al., 1995; African elephant Loxodonta africana: Dublin, 1983; Lee, 1987; Indian elephant Elaphus maximus: MacKay, 1973; Rapaport & Haight, 1987; fallow deer Cervus dama: San José & Braza, 1993) it is almost always associated with reproductive errors (Riedman, 1982) such as milk theft or exclusive adoption (Packer et al., 1992). However, simultaneous non-offspring nursing in monotocous species has been reported in some bat species (e.g. McCracken, 1984; Eales, Bullock & Slater, 1988), African elephants (Lee, 1987), and captive Indian elephants (Rapaport & Haight, 1987). Recent research, however, suggests that nutritive non-offspring nursing in African elephants is rarer than previously thought as most reported instances were probably non-lactating juveniles allowing infants to suckle (Lee & Moss, 1986; Lee, 1987, 1989).

Screening and detecting virus by receptor-ligand interactions presents an important challenge in medical and environmental diagnostics, and in drug development. We have developed a direct colorimetric detection method based on a polymeric bilayer assembly. The bilayer is composed of a self-assembled monolayer of octadecyl siloxane and a Langmuir-Blodgett layer of polydiacetylene. The polydiacetylene layer is functionalized with receptor-specific ligands such as analogs of sialic acid. The ligand serves as a molecular recognition element, while the conjugated polymer backbone signals binding at the surface by a chromatic transition. The color transition is readily visible to the naked eye as a blue to red color change and can be quantified by visible absorption spectroscopy. The color transition can be inhibited by the presence of soluble inhibitors. Raman spectroscopic analysis shows that the color transition may arise from binding induced strain on the material resulting in bond elongation and conjugation length reduction.

Supramolecular organizates of liposomes and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films are described which are capable of specifically binding to pathogens such as influenza virus. The specific interaction is between the hemagglutinin protein of the virus and an α-C-glycoside of sialic acid expressed on the surface of the liposome or LB film. Sialic acidcontaining liposomes were found to inhibit influenza virus infectivity in cell culture, and may provide a basis for new materials which act as therapeutic agents. Sialic acid-containing LB films also specifically bind to the influenza virus. In this case, the conjugated polymer backbone acts as a built-in reporter of the binding event, measurable by a chromatic change in the visible absorption spectrum. These films may provide a basis for new materials which act as direct detectors of binding

Carbon-carbon composites are an emerging class of composite materials having a unique combination of high-temperature properties and low densities. These properties are attractive for hot structure and thermal protection system applications in future aerospace vehicles. Aerospace service environments of particular interest are cyclic temperature, oxidizing environments to 3000°F. For carbon-carbon composites to serve as practical engineering materials in such challenging environments, their long-term mechanical and chemical stability is essential.
Many aspects of proposed service environments for these composites pose significant challenges to their satisfactory performance. Among these aspects are the oxidizing nature of the environments (including both high and low oxygen partial pressures), high temperatures, moisture, cyclic temperature service, and foreign-object impact. This paper presents results from materials performance evaluations which cover each of these parameters. The focus is on oxidation-resistant carbon-carbon composites intended specifically for multi-use aerospace applications. Results are presented for the carbon-carbon material currently in use on Space Shuttle and for newer, more advanced structural forms of these composites.
